LESSON 1:
Basic Massage Strokes

Do you ever give the person you love a massage? Do you do it well, or are you just giving a back rub? This 3-minute video can help you kick it up a notch. Anyone can use these fundamental techniques to give an excellent massage.

Oil The Body Up!
Using a proper oil can make all the difference. Many basic strokes can be uncomfortable on dry skin. Plus, good massage oils reduce the fatigue the therapist feels. You don’t need to break the bank on this. Many professional massage therapists believe that the best massage oil on earth is simple olive oil.

3 Basic Strokes: Sliding, Squeezing, & Shaking
Begin with an open hand, including the entire surface of your fingers and palm. Make long sliding strokes over the entire body part you are working. The squeezing strokes focus on individual muscles and should be smooth and gentle at first. The shaking strokes are then used to help the muscles release tension and relax. Mix these strokes up and be creative. Always start with gentle strokes and make sure your subject is aware that they need to let you know if anything feels uncomfortable.

About Nate
I curently teach at Heritage College, Denver, Colorado Campus. I originally graduated from Heritage because I wanted to a career that was less clinical than a doctor or nurse. I enjoy working with my hands, so I thought massage would be a great choice. Through my schooling, I had two wonderful instructors who guided my skills, knowledge of theory, and professional behaviors that I would need to be successful in my field. Little did I know just how prepared I was when I left.

After a few years successfully performing spa related work, I decided to fulfill another dream of becoming a teacher. To my surprise, the school where I received my degree, Heritage College was hiring for a massage instructor. I applied, interviewed, and was offered a position to teach. Since working starting with Heritage, I have grown immensely in my medical and massage knowledge and hope to instill that knowledge and my wealth of field experience to the next generations of graduates.

I have been with Heritage College for four years now and am working as the program manager for the massage program. I can’t imagine where my life would be had I not stepped in the front door of Heritage College over 10 years ago to talk to an admissions representative about the program. The spark this career college gave me has kept my motivation up through my career, and I am a better person because of it.
